Travel inspiration is everywhere for those who appreciate the experience. Below are some of my favorites quotes:
- Aesop: “Adventure is worthwhile.”
- Ray Bradbury: “We travel for romance, we travel for architecture, and we travel to be lost.”
- James Cameron: “Every time you dive, you hope you’ll see something new — some new species. Sometimes the ocean gives you a gift, sometimes it doesn’t.”
- Albert Camus: “Don’t walk behind me; I may not lead. Don’t walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend.”
- Gilbert Keith (G. K.) Chesterton: “The traveler sees what he sees. The tourist sees what he has come to see.”
- Paul Coelho: “When you travel, you are, in a very practical way, experiencing rebirth.”
- Jacques-Yves Cousteau: “From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth. But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free.”
- Jacques-Yves Cousteau: “The reason I love the sea I cannot explain – it’s physical. When you dive, you begin to feel like an angel. It’s a liberation of your weight.”
- Jacques-Yves Cousteau: “The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”
- Isak Dinesen (aka Karen Blixen): “The cure for anything is salt water – tears, sweat, or the sea.”
- Albert Einstein: “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” (While the authenticity of this quote has been questioned over the years and it may be incorrectly attributed to Einstein, I still like it.)
- T. S. Eliot: “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”
- Robert Frost: “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”
- Miriam Bird Greenberg: “Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.”
- Ernest Hemmingway: “It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.”
- Zora Neale Hurston: “There are years that ask questions and years that answer.”
- Danny Kaye: “To travel is to take a journey into yourself.”
- Jack Kerouac: “Live, travel, adventure, bless, and don’t be sorry.”
- Laozi: “A journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one’s feet.”
- LIFE Magazine (Motto): “To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, to draw closer, to find each other and to feel. That is the purpose of life.”
- James A. Michener: “If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.”
- Vera Nazarian: “Sometimes, reaching out and taking someone’s hand is the beginning of the journey. At other times, it is allowing another to take yours.”
- Cesare Pavese: “Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky – all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.”
- Fernando Sabino: “No fim, tudo dá certo. Se não deu, ainda não chegou ao fim.” (Translation: “In the end, everything will be ok. If it’s not ok, it’s not yet the end.”)
- Paul Theroux: “Travel is glamorous only in retrospect.”
- Henry David Thoreau: “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”
- Judith Thurman: “Every dreamer knows that it is entirely possible to be homesick for a place you’ve never been to, perhaps more homesick than for familiar ground.”
- J. R. R. Tolkien: “All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost.”
- Mark Twain (aka Samuel Langhorne Clemens): “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
- Michelle Ventor: “People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you figure out which it is, you know exactly what to do.” (There is much inconsistency around the source of this quote, but Iyanla Vanzant attributes this to Michelle Ventor in her book Acts of Faith: Daily Meditations for People of Colour © 1993.)
- Andrew Zimmern: “Please be a traveler, not a tourist. Try new things, meet new people, and look beyond what’s right in front of you. Those are the keys to understanding this amazing world we live in.”
